Russia’s criticism of Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter might be the most ironic thing to come out of the Kremlin since Vladimir Putin accused anyone else of election meddling. Yes, Biden—after months of pretending he’d stay out of Hunter’s legal woes—used his executive power to hand his wayward son a “full and unconditional” pardon for federal gun and tax convictions. This came just days before Hunter was set to be sentenced. Biden’s about-face only confirms what we’ve always known: the rules don’t apply when your last name is Biden.
Predictably, Russian foreign affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova jumped on this, calling the U.S. a “caricature of democracy.” Say what you will about the Kremlin’s motives, but even they can spot the blatant hypocrisy of a president who promised he wouldn’t interfere in his son’s case, only to swoop in at the last second and save Hunter from facing any real consequences. And let’s be honest: if this had been anyone else’s kid, the left would’ve been screaming for accountability. Instead, they’re bending over backward to justify a move that reeks of political favoritism.
Hunter’s laundry list of charges—three federal felony gun counts and nine tax offenses—isn’t something you can sweep under the rug with a slick PR campaign. But Biden’s team gave it a shot anyway. The president issued a statement claiming his son was “treated differently.” Well, he’s not wrong. Most Americans don’t have the luxury of a presidential pardon to dodge jail time. Biden’s interference undermines every assurance he gave about respecting the Justice Department’s independence.
Donald Trump, of course, didn’t hold back. On Truth Social, he torched Biden’s hypocrisy, asking whether the same mercy would be extended to the January 6 defendants, many of whom have been languishing in jail for years. Spoiler alert: It won’t be. Biden’s administration has shown more concern for shielding his son than ensuring equal justice under the law.
Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene, James Comer, and John Barrasso wasted no time condemning the pardon. Comer, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, has already made it clear that investigations into the Biden family’s corruption will be a priority under the next Congress. And let’s not forget Trump’s promise to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Biden family. If Hunter thought his dad’s pardon would shield him from scrutiny, he’s in for a rude awakening come January 2025.
The American people aren’t buying the left’s spin. This is cronyism, plain and simple. Biden’s decision to pardon Hunter only underscores what so many Americans already believe: Democrats play by a different set of rules. They preach accountability for everyone else but shield their own from any consequences. It’s corrupt, it’s cowardly, and it’s exactly why Trump is coming back with a mandate to clean house.
