Axios.com has revealed that Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) is pushing to be installed as California’s Attorney General by Governor Gavin Newsom.
According to the report, Schiff is quietly working on Govenor Newsom and his allies to get the appointment.
If Newsom does choose Schiff, the DNC would lose a powerful voice in the House and temporarily lose a seat in their small 221-211 majority.
Regardless, Pelosi has given Schiff her approval, a clear indication she believes she can manage without Schiff, who is currently the chair of the House Intelligence Committee.
The AG position would be a powerful stepping-stone for Schiff, the Democrat who led the Russian collusion investigation into Trump, into running for Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat, if the 87-year-old decides to not run for reelection in 2024. As many expect her to not do.
The move would also mean a dramatic change in Schiff’s career. In 2018, Speaker Pelosi was reportedly preparing him to replace her. But in 2019, he led the initial impeachment of President Trump, based on untrue accusations by an anonymous “whistleblower” whom Schiff promised to reveal and then covered up once the GOP began digging for answers.
Schiff also lied to Americans about his committee’s prior discussions with the “whistleblower,” who had no direct knowledge of the supposed call between President Trump and the Ukrainian President.
Choosing Schiff might be risky for Governor Newsom, whose approval has already been plummeting, and who is coming up against a possible recall this year.
