Black Lives Matter activist Hawk Newsome has a list of demands for the U.S. government, including defunding the police.
Newsome said black people also have an issue with “government overstepping its bounds,” saying that policing is an example of this. He said that the current view that crime requires additional policing is incorrect and that the country should look at crime as a public health crisis while examining why people commit crimes.
“They’re desperate, they’re poor, they’re undereducated, and they are left out to dry by this American system of government,” he said.
Newsome said that rather than increasing police, governments should defund the police and provide resources that give people greater opportunities instead.
“You must invest in people, you must give people jobs, you must make people employable,” he said as a way to reduce crime.
Last week, Newsome told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum that “if this country doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it.” President Trump called this “treason.”
Newsome admitted to shortcomings in Democratic policies but said he feels that both parties have failed black people in the U.S. by catering more to corporations than people’s problems and not taking the appropriate position on reducing crime.
“Black people do not trust politicians,” Newsome said. “They don’t trust Democrats.”
Host Chris Wallace referenced different approaches to seeking progress, citing Malcolm X’s “by any means necessary” philosophy versus the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s strategy of working within the system. Newsome said King was “a brilliant strategist” and “media savvy,” and accused the current “elders” of the civil rights movement of being “bought off by the Democratic establishment.”
Newsome then accused both the Obama administration of failing black people by bailing out corporations and financial institutions like Wells Fargo that have discriminated in the past.
Newsome also noted how many white people are protesting alongside the black community. Rather than vilifying them and writing them off as radicals, he said people should ask why they are joining the fight.
The Black Lives Matter group has grown increasingly boldened in weeks past. A recent incident on Friday night occurred when a group of BLM activists began shouting a political script in a Target store in Washington, D.C. where they were threatening anyone who dare call the police.
The verbal assault was led by a male with a bullhorn, who read the script in portions which were then shouted back by the rest of the group.
They yelled, “All black people, living around this neighborhood, because you prioritize money over people, until you stop calling the police, we will continue to shut your business down.”
The male with the bullhorn conducted a similar political performance on Thursday evening, where he led a similar event at a restaurant in the nation’s capital. Thursday’s script read:
“We are here tonight while you are dining because black people are dying at the hands of the police. So, while you are dining, we are sorry for your inconvenience, but black people are dying today. While you are dining, we’re going to read you some facts about the murder of black people. We are here tonight because black lives matter. We are here tonight because black trans lives matter.”
The protesters also chanted, “Free the people. Fight the power. Fuck the police.”
