Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said national news coverage of the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, riot at the United States Capitol will probably be “nauseating” and he will not watch it.
“This is like their Christmas, Jan. 6, OK? They’re going to take this and milk it for anything they can to try to be able to smear Trump supporters,” DeSantis said at a media conference, referring to the NY and D.C.-based news in an answer to the media’s question.

One year ago, a mob of then-Pres. Donald Trump’s supporters rushed the U.S. Capitol, breaching security and attacking cops in an attempt to disrupt the congressional proceedings to certify Pres. Joe Biden’s Electoral College win in the 2020 presidential election. An officer shot and killed Ashli Babbit during the riot after she attempted to go into the U.S. House Chamber. One cop, Brian Sicknick, died on January 7 after a physical altercation with some of the rioters the day prior. Months following the riot, D.C.’s chief medical examiner said that Sicknick had suffered from two strokes and died from natural causes.
Two other officers took committed suicide in the days following the riot. Two of Donald Trump’s supporters passed away from natural causes during the riot, and one woman’s death was determined to be an accident after she was stampeded to death as the mob rushed into the Capitol building.
Over 700 people have been put in jail after the riot, with a lot of the rioters being held in D.C. jails as they wait for their trial. Though many media outlets have called Jan. 6 rioters “insurrectionists,” none of the rioters accused have actually been charged with insurrection or sedation.
Speaking this week, Vice Pres. Kamala Harris compared the Jan. 6 riot to the September 11 terrorist attacks and the attack on Pearl Harbor.
When Joe Biden spoke, he squarely blamed Donald Trump’s refusal to accept the outcome of the 2020 election for the riot, accusing his Trump of having “spread and created the web of lies regarding the 2020 election.”
DeSantis said the events of January 6 would be politicized to stir up some animosity toward Trump supporters.
He went on to say that everyone who committed crimes that day during the riot must be held accountable. “But let us just be clear here: When they are trying to act like this is something that’s akin to the Sept. 11 attacks, that is an insult to those people that were going into those burning buildings. And it is an insult to some when you say it is an insurrection and then a year after, nobody has been charged with that.”
“I don’t think anything good will come from anything that Nancy Pelosi and the gang are doing. I do not think anything from the corporate media will be enlightening. I think it is going to be nauseating honestly, and I am not going to do it,” DeSantis stated.
