House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed Republican critics of the new coronavirus relief package unveiled by House Democrats this week, saying she “can’t be bothered” about what other people say.

“Your Republican counterpart, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, called it a liberal wish list of a bunch of items that you wanted to have passed even before the coronavirus pandemic happened,” CNN’s Jake Tapper said to Pelosi about criticism’s of the $3 trillion relief package proposed by Democrats. “What’s your response to that? I mean, is this very specifically coronavirus-focused, or are there things in here that have nothing to do with it?”

“He knows that what he said isn’t so,” Pelosi responded. “Putting that aside, I can’t be bothered about what others say. What I’m proud of is what we are doing. And the fact is that in all four of the bills that have passed before, they’ve all been bipartisan.”

Pelosi continued, “We’ve all, in our caucus, have agreed that everything is coronavirus-centric, and also, in a timely way that relates to the virus. It’s too deadly to our lives, to our livelihood, to our democracy, for us to use it for any other purpose.”

McCarthy and others have called out Democrats for including millions of dollars for, what Republicans consider, unrelated projects in the bill, which is meant to provide coronavirus relief.

Those projects include $50 million in funding for “environmental justice” grants, $40 million for “bio surveillance of wildlife,” $25 billion for the U.S. Postal Service, an automatic review to determine whether or not illegal immigrants currently detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement should be released, and coronavirus relief funds for illegal immigrants.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has deemed the bill “dead on arrival” in the U.S. Senate.

“What you’ve seen in the House [from] Nancy is not something designed to deal with reality, but designed to deal with aspirations. This is not a time for aspirational legislation, this is a time for practical response to the coronavirus pandemic,” McConnell said Tuesday.

Republican Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso added that the bill is a “payoff” to Pelosi’s constituents, and it will “never pass” through the Senate.
