Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders recently admitted that his own party was responsible for holding up much needed coronavirus relief – but appeared to suggest that that’s exactly how it should be.
Proving once again that the Democratic party doesn’t actually care about the people as it claims, Sanders went on to criticize any Democratic leader who would dare get behind a newly proposed $908 billion relief package.
This comes of course after President Trump offered proposed a $1.8 trillion bill back in Octoboer which the Democrats rejected for their typical political reasons.
CNN host Jake Tapper asked the senator whether it was a mistake for Democrats to walk away from the White House’s $1.8 trillion bill, which likely would have included $1,200 direct payments to all Americans, when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was proposing a $2.2 trillion bill at the time.
Sanders said, “That’s right. … That’s what I’m saying.”
“What we need is a compromise. I know I can’t get everything that I want. But this bill really is not a compromise,” Sanders said of a $908 billion stimulus package that a bipartisan group of senators introduced last week. “It gives the Republicans almost everything that they wanted.”
Sanders’ remarks expose the truth behind the false the narrative that the Republicans are the ones responsible for the stalled coronavirus relief efforts.
The most recently proposed $908 billion bill allocates about $300 billion in funding for small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program, $240 billion in aid for state and local governments, $180 billion to extend boosted unemployment benefits at $300 per week for four months, and a temporary moratorium on COVID-19 liability lawsuits to allow states enough time to design their own laws.
“Democrats talked about over $3 trillion in new money to help working families in this country, so I don’t think this is much of a compromise,” the senator said. “I think we have got to do a lot better and negotiate a lot harder.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, however seems to suddenly be behind the bill – claiming that as long as the Democrats get the White House, its “OK now.”
More specifically, Pelosi called the projected election of Joe Biden a “game-changer” and said agreeing on a smaller relief package is “OK now because we have a new president.”
Former Rep. Trey Gowdy Pelosi over the comments.
“That’s one of the dumbest and also most despicable things I have ever heard an alleged leader say, that because Joe Biden won, it’s OK to do it but if Donald Trump had won,” Gowdy told Fox News’s Dana Perino Monday afternoon.
“What’s missing, Dana, is if Paul Ryan or John Boehner had said or done what she just said, there would be media outcry,” the former South Carolina congressman continued.
“What other entity has commented on what the speaker of the House just said? Because Biden won, we will do it. But while it was Trump, we weren’t going to give him a victory. I mean, it really is so outrageous. It’s hard to get me upset, but what she just said makes me madder than hell.”
Congress is reportedly planning to put forward a short-term measure to keep the government running through Dec. 18 while both sides of the aisle continue to negotiate additional coronavirus relief.
