As President Donald Trump left the White House, tens of millions of his supporters were understandably upset at how everything unfolded at the very end, especially with regard to how many of his so-called “allies” in Congress turned on him in the eleventh-hour.

Because of that, widespread reports surfaced that hinted at the possibility of Trump creating a third-party option called the “Patriot Party,” which gained a lot of traction among his supporters, most of whom expressed their absolute disgust with the do-nothing Republicans who, in many cases, left Trump out to dry when he needed them the most.

Critics of the idea, within the party, also emerged, warning that while the idea of a third, Trump-centric party sounds good on paper, it would ultimately lead to irreparable damage to the Republican party that would likely end up in massive losses in Congress for years to come.

According to Newsmax, over the weekend a New York Times reporter with sources close to Trump indicated that, for now, he’s set aside the idea of launching such a party and instead will likely focus on using his political street cred to primary certain Republicans in the upcoming 2022 primaries.

“In last 24 hours, after floating through a few folks that he was considering creating a third-party as a way to keep Senate Rs in line ahead of impeachment, Trump has been talked out of that and is making clear to people he isn’t pursuing it, per ppl familiar w his thinking,” The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman tweeted Sunday.

As Haberman’s tweet indicated, Trump might have just teased the idea of the Patriot Party to scare Never Trump Republicans in the Senate into not joining Democrats in casting a pro-conviction vote in his upcoming Senate impeachment trial — a strategy that has appeared to have worked.

A number of House Republicans voted in favor of impeaching Trump, including Rep. Liz Cheney, who may have ended her career as a result of her emotion-based vote, as she already has a very popular primary challenger in her state. Trump reportedly will be focusing on primarying some or all of the 10 House Republicans who voted in favor of impeachment, following the January 6 Capitol riots.

With Trump’s backing and tens of millions of Trump supporters scattered throughout the states that those pro-impeachment House Republicans represent, the possibility of several successful primary attacks is high.

There’s a lot of time between now and then, but it’s crystal clear at this point that when Trump said he would be back, in some form, as he departed Joint Base Andrews for the last time, he most certainly wasn’t lying.
